The price of extra virgin olive oil

WHY DOES THE PRICE OF EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL VARY SO MUCH?

We are all used to buying the oil we use daily on the supermarket shelves. The price offered is often much lower than that imposed on a superior quality extra virgin olive oil .

What causes this difference?

To understand what the price of oil depends on, you need to consider the entire production chain, from the olive to the bottling. In fact, each phase of production affects the quality of the product and its final cost.

With about 7 kilograms of olives , about a liter of oil is produced, so the raw material alone can reach a cost per liter of between 4.90 and 6

Il prezzo dell'olio extravergine di oliva
70 euros approximately. Furthermore, the price of olives also depends on the oil campaign, more or less good, and on the harvest period: picking the olives when they have just started to ripen, in October, results in a lower yield compared to a much higher quantity of polyphenols and antioxidants.

Furthermore, the olives used by Coppini Arte Olearia are all of Italian origin, certified throughout the entire journey from the tree to your table.

All the subsequent steps in the processing of extra virgin olive oil , if carried out with due care, further increase the price of oil per liter . From cultivation carried out with organic fertilizers, by expert olive growers and agronomists, to harvesting, done by hand and not by machine. From cold extraction , essential to safeguard the organoleptic characteristics of the olives , to certification, which involves additional costs, but which guarantees the quality of the product.

What causes the underpriced price of extra virgin olive oil?

Extra virgin olive oil from the EU and not from Italy often has lower prices, and the raw material may be of poor quality, with the consequent risk of rancidity: what is presented as Italian oil is in reality a mixture of oils from various origins and of different quality levels.

Furthermore, large-scale distribution is interested in achieving large sales volumes even if the margin on a single bottle is rather low. This accustoms consumers to buying oil at rock-bottom prices, damaging the market of small producers, who instead work on quality.

There is no "correct" standard price for olive oil . The price depends on the olive oil campaign, the quality of the raw materials, the origin of the oil and the distribution, but for sure a bottle of oil should not cost less than 8 euros per liter.
