Olive growing in the Parma area

DIFFUSION OF OLIVE GROWING IN ITALY

Parma is not only the capital of the Food Valley. Since 2014 it has also been the City of Oil : it was named by the national association of the same name. Parma and its territory, in fact, have all the credentials to expand the current food and wine offering, enriching the basket of typical products with a quality extra virgin olive oil . Coppini Arte Olearia, with its intense relationship with the territory, its innovative capacity, its pioneering courage, and its care for the product has been partly responsible for this conquest.

In Italy, a treasure chest of olive oil specialties where there are many oils protected at European level by legal recognitions such as DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) and IGP (Protected Geographical Identification), olive growing extends to almost all regions, although it is concentrated above all in the Center-South: in Puglia, followed by Sicily, Calabria, Abruzzo, Campania, Lazio, Tuscany. However, the olive tree is also present in the North, in areas particularly favorable to its cultivation, such as the Ligurian Riviera, the territories around the Lombard lakes, in Friuli, in Veneto and, in our region, on the hills of Romagna (Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna, Rimini)

In the provinces of Emilia, however, olive growing is still in its infancy, although eight centuries ago the hills of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia and Modena were olive groves, as demonstrated by the many centuries-old trees that have survived to this day. An important study conducted from 2004 to 2013, which also involved the University of Parma, has shown not only how olive cultivation in Emilia has a long history, but also how it is possible to resume it successfully and with good economic prospects. Thanks to the presence of areas with strong vocation and the high quality of the oil that can be produced.
