The Olive Tree at Christmas

THE OLIVE TREE IN THE CHRISTMAS TRADITION

Every year at Christmas, different customs and traditions are repeated, some of these involve the olive tree , the silver tree, which has been used since ancient times during the holidays. Already in ancient Rome (even if Christmas was not yet spoken of) the exchange of gifts was a good luck custom, at the beginning olive or laurel branches were exchanged, later they were replaced by various objects.

In many countries the custom of the Yule log was a very widespread tradition. On Christmas Eve a large log, of oak or olive , was lit in the fireplace, which was supposed to heat and give light and welcome until New Year's Eve if not until Epiphany. The log had a symbolic meaning: the past was burned and, from the way the wood burned, people tried to gather omens about how the future would be. Sometimes the ashes were then scattered on the fields to ensure good harvests

In Liguria, on Christmas Eve, people cleaned and decorated the house with decorations made with long strings in which juniper berries, bay leaves, olive branches, macaroni, walnuts and hazelnuts were threaded. According to tradition, among the guests present at the Christmas lunch, the youngest would place an olive branch in the center of the table, a symbol of good luck for the whole family (health, money and luck).
